Membership

The Bible teaches that the Christian life is lived together as the church - a local body of believers coming together as God's covenant community.

What is the purpose of membership?

Boundaries around spiritual care and protection.
Distinction between outside and insiders.
Basis for accountability.
Context for carrying out the "one anothers" of the NT.

What is the purpose of membership?

Gather for worship (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Disciple each other (Matthew 28:19-20)
Guard the church's doctrine (Galatians 1:8-9)
Follow & support their leaders (Hebrews 13:17)
Serve the body (John 13:14-15)

Polity

First Hewitt affirms the New Testament offices of pastor and deacon, who lead within a framework of the congregation’s authority to guard the church’s membership and doctrine.

Led by pastors

Teaching, shepherding, overseeing.
1 Peter 5:1-5; 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13; Acts 20:28

Served by deacons

Practical needs, church unity, member care.
Acts 6:1-7; 1 Timothy 3:8-13

Congregational Authority

Affirming members, guarding doctrine.

Serving

Our vision is to equip every member of First Hewitt to participate in the Great Commission by serving Jesus locally and globally, inside and outside the church walls.

Serve the Body

Use our gifts to build up the local church.

Serve the City

Spending our lives for the good of our community.
